Is This (Insert fad diet) Right For You?

As a fitness coach I often get asked my opinion on the in various fad diets, or If I think the latest superfood trend will help shed 10 pounds by the end of the month, etc.

My response is always in the form of three questions?
๐Ÿ‘‰ Is it maintainable

๐Ÿ‘‰ Is it sustainable?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Will it help you realize your short-term and long-term goals?

Is it maintainable? Consider if this is something you can stick with long-term and make it part of your lifestyle. Budget and time constraints are sometimes the biggest roadblocks, but also consider does it include food that you actually like and will eat? Who wants to live off three pounds of bananas per day? Or eat cabbage soup 5 times a day for a week? Or drink a glass of apple cider vinegar before every meal?

Is it sustainable? So you found a diet that fits your budget, schedule and includes food you’re willing to eat. Does it provide adequate amounts of nutrients your body needs to function at its best? Your body needs constant refueling and nourishment. Starving the body of necessary nutrients and energy (calories) will eventually cause your body to rebel and store fat instead of lose it, bringing you back to square one.

Will it help you realize your short-term and long-term goals? Say you managed to stick with the cabbage soup diet for a week and experienced the advertised 8 pounds of weight loss. Now what? Unless you have a solid foundation of nutritional habits in place, or at least working on them, the weight is guaranteed to come back, and then some. There’s not much that will blow your confidence like starting another next year back at square one trying to lose same 20 lbs. again.

If you answered no to any of those questions, then that fad diet is probably not a good fit for you.

The reality is, there is no secret formula or food that will magically cause your body to lose weight. It all comes down calories in < calories out and learning to make different healthier food choices daily.
